Cat No: NB012
Artist: Phuturelabs
Released: 2009

Tracklisting – click track title for 320kbps MP3 download

1: The Herd

2: Foregone

3: Childhood

4: What’s Behind Door 23…

Paul Reset’s notes:

After Basepair’s EP on NB010 featuring tracks from his archive between 1998 and 2001, we decided we’d go back in time once again and resurrect these tracks from the Phuturelabs archive.

Phuturelabs was a collaborative project between myself and Scott English AKA The Noisy Minority. We made our debut with “Code 420″ on NB004 and worked on these tracks around the same time in 2000-2001 also.

“The Herd” is a moody downtempo breaks track featuring an inspiring sample from the legend that is Bill Hicks. The other three tracks take things down a darker route with the beatless “Foregone” leading the way. It’s moody ambience and evil drones throw a dark atmosphere over the EP while “Childhood” is erm..a tad strange even by our standards. Nothing really to say other than give it a listen.

“What’s Behind Door 23″ closes the EP and it’s more dark downtempo breaks. I was never really sure about the flute in this but I love the muffled drums and glass smash samples so we decided to have this on the EP.

We always talked about working on more Phuturelabs material but never got round to it, the darkness may yet return!

Time for some more digging in the archives! This was a track that I worked on with New York based producer Michael Rivera in 2000/2001. It was originally planned for NERVE002 – but then SKC came along and all plans went out the window!

I met Michael online as he ran Inflection Records and introduced me to the aforementioned Hungarian super producer as he released a couple of his tracks as the first release on Inflection. We decided to start work on a tune and this is the fruit of our labour. I don’t think it ever really got properly finished and the working title of “Sketch” seemed apt so we left it at that. The track was started by myself in Modplug Tracker and then worked on by Michael in Cubase while also utilising the glorious filters in the Emu E6400 Ultra sampler.

Recently Michael’s been doing a bit of dj’ing techno but is getting back into drum n bass so hopefully we’ll see more productions from him soon. Enjoy, and remember – it was written about 8 years ago!

Paul Reset’s notes:

The Figures was a short-lived collaborative project between myself and Martin BSE – we scratched out heads and sent samples back and forth and these are the four tracks that were born of that. Ranging from moody downtempo breaks to weird ambience and with some randomness inbetween.

I was really chuffed with the way these tracks came out and we always meant to work on more material but life and alcohol got in the way. The Figures may one day rise from the darkness.

Paul Reset’s notes:

I’d realised that there was a huge amount of quality production talent in Scotland and no real showcase of this talent. So I decided to put this EP together. Basically I wanted to get the best Scottish drum n bass producers in one place to show off the talent to the world! The EP is fairly varied style wise – ranging from Morphy’s dubby rollers to BZ’s jump up tinged beats and even with some spacey downtempo towards the end.

The artwork is actually a map of Scotland but I’m not 100% sure how obvious that is…..

Also here’s the press release that went out with the MP3s to the press etc – I thought it was fairly amusing and also has all the Myspace links etc for the artists so is functional as well as (very slightly) humorous!

Press release

With a history of invention spanning such diverse creations as the telephone, golf and economics, Scotland has proven itself to be at the forefront of well, basically, genius. To prove this once again, Nerve Recordings have focused on this part of the world for it’s new release – The Intercity EP, featuring producers spread the length and breadth of Scotland (with a guest appearance from Singapore). From the dubby beats of Morphy to the techy futurism of Velocet, most of the sub genre’s of drum n bass make an appearance here and show the quality and diversity of the production talent in the country. Starting with the tough beats of “Ruffneck” through to Linden’s smooth roller “Day by Day” and finishing on two slabs of downtempo in the shape of Velocet’s epic “Go With The Flaw” and the doom laden sounds of “Not In My Town” from the Figures of the Lost Dawn.

Morphy:

With a love of dub so strong, you’d think he had an echo box for a heart, Morphy has carved a niche for himself in drum n bass with his releases on labels such as Function, Horizons and Direct. Popping up twice on the EP, first with “Ruffneck” – a chunky half time dub monger finding favour with fans of drum n bass and dubstep alike and being joined by Singapore’s number 1 dj and producer Kiat on his second outing – “Island Rock”, a combination of crisp breaks and killer sub bass sure to smash up any dancefloor.

More info – http://www.myspace.com/morphydubbed

Velocet:

Islay born Velocet splits his time between making the finest bread in Glasgow and making beats on his beloved Logic Audio. Again making two appearances on the EP, firstly, joined by Paul Reset on the techy dnb monster that is “Awaken Life” and secondly on his tod and in epic downtempo mode with “Go With The Flaw”.

More info – you will know him by the trail of the bread…

Linden:

Dundee based Linden made his debut on Nerve Recordings earlier this year with the Hidden EP featuring 4 chunks of full on techy dnb. Here, he takes things down a gear and delivers 7 minutes of rollin beats and bass in the shape of “Day by Day”, once again demonstrating why he’s been tipped for the top by many.

More info – http://www.myspace.com/dalinden

9 Tails Fox:

The shadowy figure of the one known as 9 Tails Fox is often spoken about in hushed tones and occasionally referred to simply as “The Scottish Producer”. No one is entirely sure what he looks like, and this track was delivered on DAT by a vulture bearing a wax-sealed letter reading “abandon all hope ye who doth hear these breaks”. The track, “Tenma” uses crystal clean breaks and dark atmospherics underpinned by a bassline guaranteed to shake your rib cage.

More info – http://www.myspace.com/9tailsfox

BZ:

Motherwell based BZ has made a name for himself as one of the top MC’s in Scotland whilst building up a reputation for producing high quality hard edged beats. He makes his debut here with the techy tinged jump up flavours of “Positive Vibes”.

More info – http://www.myspace.com/bzxplicit

The Figures of the Lost Dawn:

A meeting of minds between Scottish producers Martin BSE and Paul Reset came to fruition in the form of The Figures of the Lost Dawn. Both producers left behind their own native genre’s to carve out this dark piece of downtempo electronica.

1: Wake Up

4: “Dark Dawn”

Paul Reset’s notes:

I decided to bring Nerve Breaks from the grave in 2008 with an EP of my own tracks that had previously come out on vinyl but weren’t available anymore. The first track “Wake Up” was originally released on Breaks4Ever coupled with an AMB remix which was then featured on one of Distinctive’s brilliant Y4K mix CDs. It’s a big chunky breaks track with nice ravey stabs and a bowel troubling bassline.

Next up it’s two remixes of my track “Self Sufficient” – originally released on Backroom Records. The original isn’t here unfortunately as the file was lost – I’m still looking for it (after all these years) and hopefully it’ll feature on another EP of bits and bobs from me on NB later in 2009. To the remixes – first up is Stef Stabilizer’s remix – a lovely slice of progressive breaks with a kinda early morning/really late night type vibe about it. Secondly, Dubwise Selective delivered a lovely old skool-esque remix with a garagey bassline.

To finish up the EP I dug out a track from the archives called “Dark Dawn” – this was originally a remix of Martin BSE’s “Skeeb Dut” for Space Industries. It’s a bit ambient, a bit eerie, a bit moody and a bit dark. Inspired heavily by Future Sound of London’s “ISDN” album.

Released: 2002

Tracklisting – click track title for 320kbps MP3 download

Paul Reset’s notes:

As we approached our fifth release, we decided it’d be nice to do something a wee bitty special and get some remixes done. Kemal was a friend from around the dnb scene in Glasgow (he gave me my first proper gig and we also worked on a track called Kontempt for Underfire) so I asked if he fancied taking on one of my breaks tunes. I met him for a coffee and gave him the parts to “Crisis” (originally released on NB004) and within a couple of days – he’d finished it, the man was a genius in the studio The track was and probably still is the biggest track we’ve ever released – everyone was playing it – from Andy C to Marcus Intalex and everyone inbetween. The release did well – but just after it came out our distributor at the time (Epicentre) went under, so I have no real idea how it sold other than “well”.

For the flip, we recruited rising stars Black Sun Empire. They’d been releasing some absolutely amazing tunes and we were keen to see what they’d do to SKC’s “Recharger” (from NERVE002). They turned in a brilliant remix which upped the dancefloor factor of the original and added their own very unique BSE touches.

Once again – artwork duties were carried out by the guys at Yuva.TV.

(oh and again I’ve nicked the artwork from Rolldabeats temporarily until I get my own versions online)

Paul Reset’s notes:

Dan (Contax) was working on some amazing new breaks tunes and I signed this badboy up within minutes of hearing it. I also thought I wouldn’t mind a wee bash at remixing it! Quality bassy breaks are again the order of the day and I was really proud of my remix, although it never came close to the original!

Paul Reset’s notes:

Another of my creations on the mighty Modplug Tracker! A big chunky slice of dark breaks with the hoover noise – what more can ya ask for! To erm lighten the mood a little I decided to get some remixes done. First up was Gecko – who was a friend of another breaks producer (the name escapes me at the moment) and he turned in a cracking uppy breaks number with a big fat electro type bassline (as in electro electro – not electro house). Glasgow Dj’s the Jengaheads were also drafted in and I think they did an amazing job – defo, for me, the best mix of the pack. A brilliant slice of breaks with the original hook actually turned into something a bit catchy! The Jengaheads no longer work as a duo but Dj Mash has now gone solo and is doing some great things production, dj wise and radio wise – so check him out.

Cat No: NB004
Artist: Paul Reset vs The Noisy Minority
Released: 4th November 2002

Tracklisting – click track title to download 320kbps Mp3:

A: “Code 420 (Hoista rmx)”

B1: “Code 420 (Original)”

B2: “Crisis” – Paul Reset

Paul Reset’s notes:

After a chance meeting while both working for a cable TV company in Glasgow, I formed a good friendship with Scott (English, AKA The Noisy Minority) and we launched a site in 1999 called Phuturetech. The site’s purpose was to host dj mixes in streaming real audio (remember that!) and it did quite well – we had some fairly big names submitting exclusive mixes (Praga Khan and DJ Zinc amongst many others!) but in the end hosting became a problem and we closed the site.

So as well as that we also worked on a bit of music together and this track was the fruit of a fairly drunken session. Scott started the track and had the main structure and hook etc – I just kinda polished it up, added strings etc and Scott has admitted that the Milli Vanilla break was his idea!

Anyway – moody, dark breaks is the order of the day on “Code 420″ and to this day is still the favourite track that I’ve worked on, Annie Nightingale even played it and said very nice things about it! Here’s a wee clip of her playing it (cheers Scott!).

We drafted in Hoista to kinda cheer it up a bit and his remix is a bit of a belter – big chunky breaks bizness! The final track on the release – “Crisis” is a really doomy downtempo number from myself – Kemal later remixed it dnb style to great effect on NERVE005.

The artwork was designed by usual Nerve designer Nick at Yuva.TV.

(oh and I’ve nicked the artwork from Rolldabeats temporarily until I get my own versions online)

Cat No: NB001
Artist: Paul Reset
Released: 2002 (vague I know, but I can’t remember)

Tracklisting – click track title for 320kbps Mp3 download:

A: Paul Reset – Fuzzdup (Hedrock Valley Beats rmx)

B1: Paul Reset – Fuzzdup

B2: Paul Reset – 20Free

Paul Reset’s notes:

Well, after moving Nerve over to a new distributor called Epicentre, things seemed to be going ok (although we were yet to have a release) After sending them some of my breaks demos, they asked if I fancied setting up a breaks label. To be honest it’d never occurred to me but seemed a good idea..so why not! I’d already had one breaks release on Backroom Records and was keen to get some more of my funky ass dark breakbeat shit out into the world.

Both these tracks were written in the glorious Modplug Tracker with all effects etc done in Soundforge. The distro were keen for a more uppy track for the aside and I thought a remix would do the trick. I’d recently befriended the amazing producer Decky from Hedrock Valley Beats, I asked if they’d be up for doing a remix and thankfully they were. So their remix is a brillianty chunky slice of old skool tinged breaks and my tracks are on a deeper tip.

The artwork was designed by usual Nerve designer Nick at Yuva.TV.

The rest is history, enjoy!

(oh and I’ve nicked the artwork from Rolldabeats temporarily until I get my own versions online)
