ICR has delivered time and time again for Nerve (with NERVE018, NERVEBP002 and NERVEBP003) and he’s a producer I’m constantly pestering for new material. An ability to draw on any number of influences to create a drum n bass concoction that’s uniquely his own and free of any associations to passing trends in dnb has seen him carve out his own niche and build an untarnished reputation.

While he was previously one of the most prolific producers in the scene, other commitments have seen him spend less time recently on new material. But thankfully he’s back with an amazing new free album called “Restored”.

Showcasing his ability to create otherworldly atmospherics and wrapping them in tough beats and bass, he’s also included his headwrecking remix of Goldie’s rave classic “Krisp Biscuit” and DJ Trax pops in at the end to turn in an amazing hip hop remix of “Less Than Three”.

I first discovered NJC’s work through his “Feelz Good” track on L Plates, I played the tune to death, got in touch and we did the tune swapping thing for a good few years, again and again he delivered dancefloor smasher after smasher (“Lose It” on Function was another big fave) and was a big feature of my sets for many years. He’s been off working in other genre’s for the past coupla years (explained further below) but now he’s back with an album of unreleased tunes now available on iTunes and he’s kindly given us this 14 track album of brilliant drum n bass, downtempo, dubstep and electronica as a wee taster for it!

Some linear notes if you will….

All of the music from the NJC Xmas Xtras are tracks that have been produced over the last 8 years by Nat Clarkson. Some of them have been made in the last 3 years and have slipped the net whilst Nat has been producing with bands and new artists. You may remember some of the DnB tracks as they were floating around during 2003/2005. Tracks like Hub Dole and Stand and Deliver were made with UK band The Marvelous whilst Nat was producing their debut album during 2007. Nat says “It was a nice break to explore the different sounds of live music along with dance production, we had fun making the tracks and thats important”. Nat was asked to do a remix of the National Anthem which is the last track in the downloads – this was a joke really but worth sharing with everyone…

NJC is currently working on new DnB for release in 2010 and also co-runs Ambiel Music with Gordon Mulrain and Dance Regime with Chris Grabiec which are 2 independent labels. Ambiel Music is geared towards bands, solo acts, experimental and non-hard dance music. Dance Regime is geared towards harder dance and electronic music. These labels are still under development.

To tie in with this free download NJC has put out an album of unreleased DnB tracks from 2003-2005, now available at iTunes.

The nice Cause 4 Concern lads gave away a coupla unreleased gems on DOA recently.

First up is “Inertia (Ruff mix)” – a cracking slice of chunky techy dnb goodness with a classic break and bowel troubling sub, then they’ve kinda given away their remix of Klute’s “Traffico” – another big techy rumbler that was unfortunately never released.

KMC is a bit of a legend in the drum n bass scene – especially for those who prefer the deeper beats. The Scottish producer released some amazing atmospheric drum n bass on labels like Good Looking, 720, Partisan and Timeless. After becoming a bit disillusioned with the scene in the late 90′s he took a break to concentrate on other things, waiting in the shadows for drum n bass to regain some of the credibility that it had sadly lost.

The new deep drum n bass championed by the likes of Doc Scott and Loxy has seen KMC return with some top quality new beats and a label coming soon entitled Micro Deep Beats.

We signed up BZ’s “Positive Vibes” for the Intercity EP (NERVEEP002) and despite being quite a departure from the usual Nerve shenanigans, it was one of the most popular tracks of the 8 and always went off big style when played out.

Soooooo he’s went back in on it and shook things up a bit and toughened up the track even more!
Download it, burn it to CD, put it in your Serato crate or whatever and watch the floor go absolutely mental when this drops!

BZ – Positive Vibes VIP

I decided to start a new feature on the site where I basically giveaway wee lost gems from labels that no longer exist anymore or the releases have gone out of print etc. Meaning basically no-ones losing any money apart from people selling the second hand vinyl (and the labels/artists don’t make anything from that anyway) and the labels and artists (where contactable) don’t mind it being offered for free download.

Sooo anyway – first up in my wee lost gems dig is the Konflict remix of the Paraglider’s “Share of Bitterness” on Glasgow label WAQT from 1998. This was Konflict’s first release and IMO is still one of the best things they ever did – lovely rollin’ drums underpin an Optical-esque crunchy bassline and sub with the ethereal vocals floating around on top. Ok the drums aren’t anywhere near as polished as later work and things are a bit rough round the edges, but I think it still sounds great to this day.

Kemal and Rob gave me my first proper gig way back in 97 at their club night at Yang in Glasgow and I still remember hearing this on the PA and thinking it just sounded absolutely huge. They would of course go on to release many a monster tune but this one still holds a special place in my heart.

So here it is!

I found an old CD recently from Kemal and Rob around the time when they made “Roadblock” and it has a never released track on it, I can’t seem to find it at the mo but once I uncover it I’ll get that uploaded also for the Konflict fans.

Time for some more digging in the archives! This was a track that I worked on with New York based producer Michael Rivera in 2000/2001. It was originally planned for NERVE002 – but then SKC came along and all plans went out the window!

I met Michael online as he ran Inflection Records and introduced me to the aforementioned Hungarian super producer as he released a couple of his tracks as the first release on Inflection. We decided to start work on a tune and this is the fruit of our labour. I don’t think it ever really got properly finished and the working title of “Sketch” seemed apt so we left it at that. The track was started by myself in Modplug Tracker and then worked on by Michael in Cubase while also utilising the glorious filters in the Emu E6400 Ultra sampler.

Recently Michael’s been doing a bit of dj’ing techno but is getting back into drum n bass so hopefully we’ll see more productions from him soon. Enjoy, and remember – it was written about 8 years ago!

With a reputation as one of the UK’s best up and coming producers Linden has been makin’ the moves and duckin n diving of late and he’s decided to give away a cracking tune of his called “Captives”. It’s a belter of a tune – quality half time dnb bizness so make sure it’s in your serato crate/CD wallet.

Watch out for more material from Linden on Nerve in late 09/early 2010. Also, if you haven’t grabbed it yet I highly recommend you grab his Hidden EP (NERVEEP001) for more techy bangers!
